Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Vegetables
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 pound breakfast sausage
- 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
- 1/2 green bell pepper, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Sauce and Seasoning
- 1 (10.5-ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
- 1 (10.5-ounce) can cream of chicken soup
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley
Cheese and Topping
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
- 3 cups frozen tater tots or diced hash browns
- Nonstick cooking spray
Instructions
- Prepare and Brown Meat and Vegetables: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, breakfast sausage, chopped onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic until the meat is browned and the vegetables have softened, about 8 to 10 minutes. Drain any excess grease from the skillet to keep the casserole from becoming oily.
- Make the Creamy Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, cream of chicken soup, sour cream, salt, black pepper, and dried parsley. Stir these ingredients together until smooth and well blended. Then add the cooked meat and vegetable mixture to the bowl and mix thoroughly to evenly distribute the flavors. Fold in 1 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese into the mixture.
- Assemble the Casserole: Spread the combined mixture evenly in the prepared casserole dish, ensuring a uniform layer. Next, top the meat mixture with an even layer of frozen tater tots or diced hash browns, covering the surface completely. Finally, sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the top for a cheesy crust.
- Bake the Casserole: Place the casserole dish uncovered in the preheated oven. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until the casserole is hot, bubbly, and the top is golden brown and crisp. After baking, remove it from the oven and allow the casserole to cool for about 5 minutes to set before serving.
Notes
- This casserole can be prepared the night before and refrigerated. If baking from cold, increase baking time by 10 to 15 minutes.
- For a lighter version, substitute turkey sausage or ground turkey for the beef and sausage.
- Using diced hash browns instead of tater tots will provide a different texture but equal deliciousness.
- Ensure to drain excess grease from cooked meats to maintain a balanced, not greasy casserole.
