Description

Better Than Anything Bars are a decadent, no-fuss dessert featuring a rich chocolate cake base topped with sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips, caramel sauce, and crunchy toffee bits. Perfect for potlucks or anytime you crave an indulgent treat, these bars combine gooey layers and a buttery crumb for irresistible flavor and texture.

Ingredients

Scale

Base Layer

  • 1 box (15.25 oz) chocolate cake mix
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg

Toppings

  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce
  • 1/2 cup toffee bits (such as Heath)

Other

  • Nonstick cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Prepare Pan: Preheat oven to 350°F and lightly grease or spray a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Make Dough: In a medium bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, melted butter, and egg. Mix well until a thick dough forms.
  3. Press Base Layer: Press two-thirds of the dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish to create the crust.
  4. Add Sweetened Condensed Milk: Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the base layer to create a creamy middle layer.
  5. Top with Chocolate and Caramel: Sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the sweetened condensed milk, then drizzle caramel sauce on top for added richness.
  6. Add Remaining Dough and Toffee: Crumble the remaining dough in small pieces over the caramel layer, then sprinkle with toffee bits for crunch.
  7. Bake: Bake for 25–30 minutes until the edges are golden and the center is set.
  8. Cool and Serve: Let the bars cool completely in the pan. Slice into 24 bars and serve at room temperature or chilled for a firmer texture.

Notes

  • You can use any flavor of cake mix you prefer—devil’s food or German chocolate cake mixes work great as alternatives.
  • Store bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
  • Freeze leftover bars to preserve freshness for longer storage; thaw before serving.
