Ingredients
Scale
Pastry
- 1 sheet puff pastry (store-bought, thawed)
Filling
- 1/2 lb breakfast sausage (pork or turkey), crumbled
- 4 large eggs
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp butter (for cooking eggs)
- 1 tbsp olive oil (for cooking sausage)
Optional
- 1 tbsp fresh parsley (for garnish)
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
- Cook the Sausage: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the crumbled breakfast sausage and cook for 5-7 minutes until browned and fully cooked through. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Scramble the Eggs: In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, and pepper. Heat butter in a skillet over medium-low heat, then add the egg mixture. Stir occasionally, cooking until the eggs are softly scrambled and creamy. Remove from heat.
- Assemble the Pinwheels: Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Spread the scrambled eggs evenly over the pastry, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges. Sprinkle the cooked sausage evenly over the eggs, then top with shredded cheddar cheese.
- Roll the Pastry: Starting from one edge, carefully roll the puff pastry tightly into a log shape. Slice the log into 1-inch-wide pinwheels.
- Prepare for Baking: Place the pinwheels on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart. If desired, whisk together one egg and one tablespoon of water for an egg wash and brush it over the pinwheel tops to create a shiny, golden crust.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pinwheels are puffed up and golden brown.
- Serve: Allow the pinwheels to cool a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired for added color and freshness.
Notes
- Use turkey sausage as a leaner alternative to pork sausage.
- The egg wash is optional but helps achieve a beautiful golden crust on the pinwheels.
- Allow puff pastry to thaw completely before rolling to avoid cracking.
- Serve warm for best flavor and texture.
- Can be made ahead and reheated in the oven for a quick breakfast option.
