Description

Burrito skulls offer a creative and spooky spin on traditional burritos, making them an ideal treat for Halloween or themed parties. This recipe features a savory blend of seasoned ground beef, rice, and cheese, all wrapped inside crescent roll dough molded into skull shapes and baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Filling

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 packet taco seasoning (or 2 tablespoons homemade blend)
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or Mexican blend cheese

Dough and Preparation

  • 1 can refrigerated crescent roll dough (or pizza dough)
  • Nonstick spray for molds

Optional Toppings

  • Sour cream
  • Salsa
  • Guacamole
  • Chopped cilantro

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Oven and Molds: Preheat your oven to 375°F and lightly spray skull-shaped baking molds with nonstick spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Sauté Aromatics: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the finely diced onion and sauté for 2 to 3 minutes until softened. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  3. Cook Ground Beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet and brown thoroughly, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain any excess grease once cooked.
  4. Season the Meat: Stir in the taco seasoning and water, then simmer the mixture for 5 minutes to blend flavors. Remove from heat afterward.
  5. Mix Filling: Incorporate the cooked rice and shredded cheese into the meat mixture until evenly combined.
  6. Prepare Dough in Molds: Unroll the crescent roll dough and press it carefully into each skull mold, covering the sides and bottom with a slight dough overhang for sealing.
  7. Fill and Seal: Spoon the beef, rice, and cheese filling into each mold lined with dough. Fold the excess dough over the top to seal the burrito skull completely.
  8. Bake: Place molds in the oven and bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the dough turns golden brown and cooked through.
  9. Cool and Serve: Allow the burrito skulls to cool slightly before carefully removing them from the molds. Serve warm with optional toppings such as sour cream, salsa, guacamole, or chopped cilantro.

Notes

  • Substitute fillings with shredded chicken, black beans, or sautéed vegetables for variety.
  • Using pizza dough instead of crescent rolls can provide a sturdier wrap.
  • These burrito skulls freeze well and can be reheated easily for future meals.
