Description

Burrito skulls are a fun and spooky twist on classic burritos, perfect for Halloween or themed parties. Seasoned ground beef, cheese, and rice are wrapped in crescent dough and baked in skull-shaped molds for a creepy yet delicious handheld meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 packet taco seasoning (or 2 tablespoons homemade blend)
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or Mexican blend cheese

Dough & Assembly

  • 1 can refrigerated crescent roll dough (or pizza dough)
  • Nonstick spray for molds

Optional Toppings

  • Sour cream
  • Salsa
  • Guacamole
  • Chopped cilantro

Instructions

  1. Prepare molds and preheat oven. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly spray skull-shaped baking molds with nonstick spray to ensure easy removal after baking.
  2. Sauté aromatics. In a skillet over medium heat, add olive oil and sauté the finely diced onion for 2–3 minutes until softened. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute, releasing their flavors.
  3. Cook ground beef. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until fully browned, breaking it apart as it cooks for even texture. Drain any excess grease from the pan.
  4. Add seasoning and simmer. Stir in the taco seasoning and water, then allow the mixture to simmer for 5 minutes so the flavors meld together. Remove from heat afterwards.
  5. Combine filling ingredients. Stir in the cooked rice and shredded cheddar or Mexican blend cheese until evenly mixed, creating the savory burrito filling.
  6. Assemble burrito skulls. Unroll the crescent dough and press it firmly into each skull-shaped mold, covering the sides and bottom with a slight overhang for sealing.
  7. Fill and seal. Spoon the beef mixture evenly into each dough-lined mold. Fold the excess dough over the top to seal each burrito skull completely.
  8. Bake. Place molds into the preheated oven and bake for 15–18 minutes or until the dough turns golden brown and cooked through.
  9. Cool and serve. Let the burrito skulls cool slightly before carefully removing them from the molds. Serve warm with your favorite toppings like sour cream, salsa, guacamole, or chopped cilantro.

Notes

  • Use shredded chicken, black beans, or sautéed vegetables as filling variations for different flavors and dietary preferences.
  • Pizza dough can be used instead of crescent dough for a sturdier wrap that holds up well.
  • These burrito skulls freeze well—store them in airtight containers and reheat in the oven to enjoy later.
