Description

This Chocolate Cheesecake Trifle is a decadent layered dessert featuring moist chocolate cake, creamy cheesecake filling, and rich chocolate pudding. Topped with whipped topping, chocolate chips, and optional crushed cookies or brownie chunks, it offers a delightful combination of textures and flavors perfect for any occasion. Easy to prepare ahead and impressively delicious, this trifle is a crowd-pleasing American dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Chocolate Cake

  • 1 box (15.25 oz) chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed on box)

Cheesecake Layer

  • 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 container (8 oz) whipped topping, thawed

Chocolate Pudding Layer

  • 1 package (3.9 oz) instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 cups cold milk

Additional Toppings

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips or chocolate shavings
  • Crushed chocolate cookies or brownie chunks for layering (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the chocolate cake: Follow the package directions to bake the chocolate cake. Once baked, allow it to cool completely before cutting into small cubes suitable for layering.
  2. Make the cheesecake mixture: In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy. Gently fold in the whipped topping until fully combined, creating a light and fluffy cheesecake layer.
  3. Prepare the chocolate pudding: In a separate bowl, whisk together the instant chocolate pudding mix and cold milk for about 2 minutes until the pudding thickens.
  4. Assemble the trifle: In a large trifle dish or individual dessert cups, layer half of the chocolate cake cubes at the bottom. Spoon half of the cheesecake mixture over the cake cubes, then layer half of the chocolate pudding on top. Sprinkle with half of the chocolate chips or shavings, and add optional crushed cookies or brownie chunks if desired.
  5. Repeat the layers: Add the remaining cake cubes, followed by the remaining cheesecake mixture, then the rest of the pudding. Top with the remaining chocolate chips or shavings.
  6. Finish and chill: Top the trifle with extra whipped topping. Garnish with additional crushed cookies, chocolate shavings, or a drizzle of chocolate sauce if desired. Refrigerate the assembled trifle for at least 2 hours before serving to allow flavors to meld.

Notes

  • This dessert can be made a day ahead and stored in the refrigerator for convenience.
  • Substitute brownies for the chocolate cake to create an extra-rich and fudgier version.
  • For a lighter option, use reduced-fat cream cheese and whipped topping.
