Ingredients
Scale
Cake Puffs
- 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box)
- 1/2 cup prepared frosting (chocolate or vanilla)
Chocolate Coating
- 12 oz semisweet or dark chocolate chips (or melting wafers)
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil or shortening
Decoration
- Festive sprinkles for decoration
Instructions
- Bake the Cake: Prepare the chocolate cake according to the package instructions. Once baked, allow the cake to cool completely to ensure easy handling for the next steps.
- Form Cake Balls: Crumble the cooled cake into fine crumbs in a large bowl. Add the frosting and mix thoroughly until the mixture forms a soft, dough-like consistency. Shape the mixture into 1-inch balls and arrange them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Freeze the Cake Balls: Place the baking sheet with the cake balls into the freezer for 20 to 30 minutes until the balls firm up, which will make dipping easier.
- Melt the Chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips together with the coconut oil in 30-second bursts. Stir after each interval until the chocolate is smooth and fully melted.
- Dip the Cake Puffs: Using a fork or dipping tool, fully coat each frozen cake ball in the melted chocolate, allowing excess chocolate to drip off. Place the coated cake puffs back onto the parchment-lined sheet.
- Decorate and Chill: Immediately sprinkle the wet chocolate coating with festive holiday sprinkles. Refrigerate the cake puffs until the chocolate hardens, about 15 minutes, before serving.
Notes
- You can customize the flavor by using any cake and frosting combo to suit your holiday theme.
