Ingredients
Scale
For the Mushrooms:
- 8 ounces button or cremini mushrooms (cleaned and stems trimmed)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon milk or water
- 1 cup breadcrumbs or panko
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Vegetable oil for frying (about 2 inches deep)
For the Cool Ranch Dip:
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill or 1/2 teaspoon dried dill
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives or green onions
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Dip: In a small bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, dill, chives, garlic powder, onion powder, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until smooth. Cover and refrigerate to let the flavors meld while you prepare the mushrooms.
- Set Up Breading Station: Arrange three shallow bowls: one with flour, one with whisked eggs and milk combined, and one with breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. This will streamline the coating process.
- Bread the Mushrooms: Dip each cleaned mushroom first into the flour, coating evenly. Next, dip it into the egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off, then thoroughly coat with the seasoned breadcrumb mixture. Place the coated mushrooms on a tray to rest before frying.
- Heat Oil: In a deep skillet or pot, pour vegetable oil to a depth of about 2 inches. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C), using a thermometer to ensure accurate temperature for optimal crisping.
- Fry the Mushrooms: Fry mushrooms in batches without crowding the pan. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes until they turn golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Serve: Serve the fried mushrooms warm alongside the chilled cool ranch dip for a flavorful appetizer or snack.
Notes
- For extra crispiness, double-dip the mushrooms by repeating the egg and breadcrumb steps before frying.
- You can also prepare these mushrooms using an air fryer: cook at 400°F for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- Ensure mushrooms are dry before breading to help the coating adhere better.
