Description

This Cuban Turkey Sandwich is a quick and delicious twist on the classic Cuban sandwich, featuring thinly sliced turkey breast, Swiss cheese, ham, and dill pickles layered inside lightly buttered Cuban bread. Pressed to golden, crispy perfection with melted cheese, it’s perfect for a satisfying lunch or dinner in under 20 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread

  • 4 slices Cuban bread (or French/Italian loaf, about 6 inches each)

Meat and Cheese

  • 6 oz (170g) thinly sliced turkey breast
  • 2 oz (56g) thinly sliced ham (optional)
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese

Condiments and Extras

  • 1/4 cup (60g) dill pickles, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 2 teaspoons butter (softened)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bread: Slice your Cuban bread lengthwise and lightly butter the outside of each slice. This will help achieve a deliciously golden and crispy crust during cooking.
  2. Layer it up: Spread yellow mustard evenly on the inside surfaces of both bread slices. Then layer the thinly sliced turkey breast, ham if using, Swiss cheese, and dill pickles on one slice.
  3. Press to impress: Close the sandwich by placing the other slice on top. Use a sandwich press or a heavy skillet to press the sandwich down firmly. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese has melted thoroughly.
  4. Slice and serve: Remove the sandwich from the press or skillet, cut it diagonally into halves, and serve immediately while it is hot and crispy for the best taste experience.

Notes

  • Using Cuban bread authenticates the sandwich, but French or Italian loaf can be good alternatives.
  • Softened butter spreads more easily and ensures an even crust on the bread.
  • The ham is optional but adds a nice layer of flavor for those who enjoy it.
  • If you do not have a sandwich press, a heavy skillet or even a brick wrapped in foil can be used to press the sandwich effectively.
  • Serve immediately for the best enjoyment as the sandwich is best when hot and melty.
