Description

This French Onion Ground Beef Casserole is a comforting and creamy dish that is perfect for a cozy family dinner. Loaded with savory flavors and topped with crispy fried onions, it’s sure to be a hit with everyone at the table.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Casserole:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 cups egg noodles, cooked al dente
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup crispy French fried onions, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the beef: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, about 5–7 minutes, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Caramelize the onions: Add sliced onion and cook for 8–10 minutes until caramelized. Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Prepare the sauce: Reduce heat and mix in the cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Fold in the cooked egg noodles until coated.
  5. Add cheeses: Stir in half of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish.
  6. Bake: Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top, followed by half of the crispy fried onions. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes. Top with the remaining fried onions and bake for an additional 5 minutes until golden and bubbly. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • For a creamier version, add 1/2 cup heavy cream to the sauce.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for the beef.
  • Serve with a green salad or roasted vegetables for a complete meal.
