Description

This Garlic Shrimp Potatoes recipe combines tender, perfectly seasoned shrimp with creamy mashed potatoes and a rich, garlicky Parmesan cream sauce. It’s a comforting and elegant dish that’s quick to prepare, perfect for a satisfying weeknight meal or a special occasion dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Shrimp and Seasoning

  • 1 pound big shrimp, deveined and peeled
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 minced garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup rich heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • Fresh thyme leaves for sprinkling on top

Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 pounds peeled, cubed potatoes
  • About 1/4 cup butter
  • About 1/2 cup warm milk
  • A pinch of salt, or more to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the mashed potatoes: Chop the peeled potatoes into chunks and boil them until tender, about 15 minutes, or until a fork easily slides into them. Drain the water, then mash the potatoes together with about 1/4 cup of butter and warm milk until creamy. Add salt to taste and cover to keep warm.
  2. Cook the shrimp: In a bowl, mix the shrimp with olive oil, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the shrimp for 2-3 minutes on each side until they turn pink and are cooked through. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  3. Make the creamy garlic sauce: In the same skillet, add butter and minced garlic, cooking for about a minute until fragrant. Pour in the heavy cream and stir gently. Add grated Parmesan cheese and Dijon mustard if using, then season with salt and pepper. Let the sauce simmer gently for 3-5 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  4. Assemble the dish: Plate the creamy mashed potatoes first, top with the cooked shrimp, and drizzle the garlic Parmesan cream sauce over everything. Finish by sprinkling fresh thyme leaves on top for a fragrant and colorful garnish.

Notes

  • Use peeled and deveined shrimp for the best texture and taste.
  • Adjust the consistency of the mashed potatoes by adding more or less warm milk as needed.
  • Dijon mustard is optional but adds a nice depth to the sauce.
  • Fresh thyme adds a lovely herbal aroma but can be substituted with parsley or omitted if unavailable.
  • For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes to the shrimp seasoning.
