Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Vegetables
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 small head green cabbage, chopped (about 6 cups)
Pantry Items and Spices
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (if needed)
- 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
- Brown the Ground Beef: In a large skillet or sauté pan over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned and cooked through, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary to avoid greasiness.
- Sauté Onions and Garlic: Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pan with the beef. Cook for 2–3 minutes until the onions are softened and fragrant.
- Cook the Cabbage: Stir in the chopped cabbage and cook for 5–6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage starts to soften but retains some texture.
- Add Tomatoes and Seasonings: Pour in the diced tomatoes with their juices and stir in the tomato paste, smoked paprika, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and the optional crushed red pepper flakes. Mix everything well to combine the flavors evenly.
- Simmer the Dish: Cover the pan and let the mixture simmer for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the cabbage to become tender and the flavors to meld beautifully. Adjust seasoning if needed.
- Serve: Serve the ground beef and cabbage hot as a main dish or side. It pairs well with cheese toppings or rice for a more filling meal.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add a splash of soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce during cooking.
- This dish can be topped with shredded cheese for added richness.
- Serve over rice or cauliflower rice to make it more filling.
