Description

A comforting and flavorful Homemade Wonton Soup featuring tender ground chicken wontons simmered in a savory ginger and garlic-infused chicken broth with fresh baby bok choy and mushrooms, garnished with green onions and cilantro. This easy-to-make soup is perfect for a cozy meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Wontons

  • 1 lb ground chicken
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 tsp grated ginger
  • 1/4 tsp white pepper
  • 30-40 wonton wrappers

For the Soup

  • 8 cups chicken broth
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp grated ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups baby bok choy or spinach
  • 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Green onions and fresh cilantro, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the wontons: Combine the ground chicken, green onions, garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, and white pepper in a mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  2. Fill and shape the wontons: Place a small spoonful of the chicken mixture into the center of each wonton wrapper. Moisten the edges with water, then fold the wrapper into a triangle and press the edges firmly to seal. Bring the opposite corners of the triangle together and pinch to form a bundle shape.
  3. Make the soup base: In a large pot, heat the chicken broth over medium heat. Stir in the soy sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, and minced garlic. Let it simmer gently for 5 to 7 minutes to develop the flavors.
  4. Add vegetables and season: Add the baby bok choy and sliced mushrooms to the simmering broth. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Allow the vegetables to soften for a couple of minutes.
  5. Cook the wontons: Gently drop the prepared wontons into the simmering soup. Cook for about 4 to 5 minutes, or until the wontons float to the surface and the chicken filling is fully cooked through.
  6. Serve: Ladle the soup into bowls, making sure to include both wontons and vegetables. Garnish with chopped green onions and fresh cilantro. Serve warm for a comforting meal.

Notes

  • Wonton wrappers can be found in most grocery stores or Asian markets; you can substitute with dumpling wrappers if necessary.
  • If preferred, you can use ground pork, shrimp, or a combination instead of ground chicken.
  • Adjust the amount of ginger and garlic to your taste preference for a stronger or milder flavor.
  • For gluten-free option, use gluten-free soy sauce and wonton wrappers made from rice flour.
  • Leftover soup can be refrigerated for up to 2 days but is best enjoyed fresh to preserve wonton texture.
