Ingredients
Scale
Dough
- 1 package (1/4 oz) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water (110°F)
- 3/4 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter (for brushing between layers)
Orange Glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
- 1 teaspoon orange zest
Instructions
- Activate yeast: In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in warm water at 110°F and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Mix wet ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, granulated sugar, salt, egg, and melted butter. Stir in the foamy yeast mixture thoroughly.
- Add flour and knead dough: Gradually add the all-purpose flour to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5–7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- First rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and allow it to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
- Shape the dough: Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a 12×18-inch rectangle. Brush the surface with melted butter.
- Cut and layer: Cut the dough into 2-inch wide strips, then stack 3–4 strips on top of each other. Cut the stacked strips into 2-inch squares, creating layers.
- Prepare for second rise: Place the stacked squares upright in a greased muffin tin so the layers fan out. Cover and let them rise again for 30–40 minutes until puffy.
- Bake the rolls: Preheat the oven to 375°F and bake the rolls for 12–15 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Prepare the glaze: While the rolls bake, whisk together powdered sugar, fresh orange juice, and orange zest to make a smooth glaze.
- Glaze and serve: Drizzle the warm rolls with the orange glaze and serve immediately for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- These rolls are best served warm and fresh to enjoy their tender flakiness and vibrant orange flavor.
- For a stronger orange flavor, add ½ teaspoon of orange extract to the glaze mixture.
- The dough can be prepared ahead of time and chilled overnight before shaping and baking to save time.
