Description

This Sausage Gravy Breakfast Pizza is a hearty and savory morning treat combining the classic flavors of southern sausage gravy with the fun and convenience of a pizza. Featuring a crispy pizza crust topped with creamy sausage gravy, melted mozzarella and cheddar cheeses, and baked eggs, this dish makes a delightful brunch or breakfast option that serves six.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough

  • 1 package refrigerated pizza dough

For the Sausage Gravy

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Toppings

  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Prepare Sausage Gravy: Cook the breakfast sausage in a skillet over medium heat until it is browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Do not drain the fat as it will help make the gravy.
  2. Add Flour: Sprinkle the 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour evenly over the cooked sausage. Stir and cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste and to start thickening the mixture.
  3. Make Gravy: Gradually stir in 2 cups of milk, continuing to cook and stir the mixture over medium heat until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper according to your taste preferences.
  4. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) and allow it to fully preheat.
  5. Prepare Dough: Roll out the refrigerated pizza dough on a greased baking sheet to shape your pizza base.
  6. Spread Gravy: Evenly spread the prepared sausage gravy over the rolled-out pizza dough, ensuring full coverage but leaving a slight border for the crust.
  7. Add Cheese: Sprinkle 2 cups of shredded mozzarella and 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the sausage gravy layer.
  8. Add Eggs: Using a spoon, create six small wells or indentations evenly spaced across the pizza surface. Crack one egg into each well carefully.
  9. Bake Pizza: Place the pizza in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the eggs are set to your liking and the crust turns golden brown.
  10. Garnish and Serve: Remove the pizza from the oven and sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh parsley before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • You can adjust the thickness of the gravy by using more or less milk, depending on your preference.
  • Make sure to watch the eggs closely while baking to achieve your preferred doneness, whether runny or fully set.
  • Using freshly chopped parsley adds a bright flavor, but you can substitute with dried parsley if needed.
  • For a spicier kick, add crushed red pepper flakes to the sausage while cooking.
  • This recipe can be customized by adding vegetables such as bell peppers or mushrooms before adding the cheese.
