Ingredients
Scale
Crust
- 1 package refrigerated pie crusts (2 crusts)
Filling
- 1/2 cup pizza sauce
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup chopped pepperoni
- 1/4 cup cooked and crumbled Italian sausage
- 2 tablespoons diced green bell pepper
- 2 tablespoons diced red onion
- 1 tablespoon sliced black olives
- 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
Finishing
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
- Optional: grated Parmesan and crushed red pepper for topping
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure it’s hot and ready for baking the hand pies.
- Prepare the dough circles: Roll out the refrigerated pie crusts on a lightly floured surface. Using a 4–5 inch cutter or a bowl, cut the dough into circles. Re-roll any scraps to maximize usage.
- Assemble the filling: On one half of each dough circle, spread a small spoonful of pizza sauce. Then layer mozzarella cheese, chopped pepperoni, crumbled Italian sausage, diced bell pepper, red onion, olives, and sprinkle with Italian seasoning.
- Seal the pies: Fold the dough over to create a half-moon shape, carefully pressing the edges with a fork to seal the filling inside securely.
- Prepare for baking: Place the hand pies onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush the tops with beaten egg wash to give them a golden glaze once baked. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan or crushed red pepper flakes if desired.
- Vent the pies: Cut a small slit in the top of each hand pie to allow steam to escape during baking, preventing sogginess.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 18–20 minutes until the crust is golden brown and crisp.
- Cool and serve: Let the hand pies cool slightly on a rack before serving to allow the filling to set and avoid burning your mouth.
Notes
- Customize these hand pies with your favorite pizza toppings like mushrooms, spinach, or ham for variety.
- For a chewier texture, substitute store-bought or homemade pizza dough instead of pie crust.
- Ensure the edges are well sealed to prevent filling leakage during baking.
- These can be made ahead of time and frozen before baking for quick snacks later.
