Description

A classic Vanilla Buttercream Frosting recipe that’s smooth, creamy, and perfect for cakes, cupcakes, and cookies. This easy no-cook frosting blends softened butter with powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and a touch of cream to create a fluffy and delicious topping that can be easily customized with food coloring or additional vanilla for a whiter finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Buttercream Frosting Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 34 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 23 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Beat the Butter: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter on medium speed for 2–3 minutes until light and creamy. This step ensures a smooth base for your frosting.
  2. Add Powdered Sugar: Gradually add 3 cups of the powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating on low speed until combined, then on medium speed until the mixture is smooth and fluffy.
  3. Incorporate Vanilla and Cream: Add the vanilla extract, a pinch of salt, and 2 tablespoons of heavy cream or milk. Beat on medium-high speed for 1–2 minutes until the frosting becomes light and fluffy.
  4. Adjust Consistency: If the frosting is too thick, add more cream 1 teaspoon at a time until you reach the desired consistency. If it is too thin, gradually add the remaining powdered sugar until it thickens appropriately.
  5. Use or Store: Use immediately to frost cakes, cupcakes, or cookies. Alternatively, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Rewhip before using if refrigerated.

Notes

  • For a whiter frosting, use clear vanilla extract and beat for an extra 1–2 minutes to incorporate more air.
  • You can add food coloring to customize the frosting color for decorative purposes.
  • Ensure powdered sugar is sifted to avoid lumps in the frosting.
  • Store leftover frosting in an airtight container in the fridge and bring to room temperature before rewhipping.
