  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup whole milk

For the caramel frosting:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Heat the oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. Prepare the cake: Combine dry ingredients in a bowl. Cream butter and sugar, add eggs and vanilla. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk/cream. Divide batter into pans and bake for 25–30 minutes. Cool on wire racks.
  3. Make the frosting: Melt butter, stir in brown sugar, add milk, bring to a boil. Remove from heat, whisk in powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth. Let cool slightly, then frost the cake layers.
